April & May Bloom with Activities in the Valley

April 02, 2018

Spring is in the air here in Walla Walla – the winter wheat is greening our hillsides, the downtown is lined with blossoms, and temperatures are perfect for strolling, cycling or just soaking up the season’s first warm rays of sun.

Events & Celebrations:

Tour of Walla Walla Cycling Weekend – April 20-22. This three-day race takes cyclists through the Valley’s budding countryside and downtown. Even if you’re not a cyclist, enjoy the excitement of the race as it passes through Main Street. Interested in taking a spin yourself? Stop into Allegro Cyclery to rent a bike and learn about our many scenic cycling routes.

Annual Renaissance Faire – April 21. Whitman College hosts this fair, now in its 49th year, where you’ll enjoy live music and theatre performances, unicycle jousting, fencing, and many talented local merchants and performers.

Food Truck NightMay 7. Locals love when Walla Walla’s delicious food trucks head to one location the first Monday of each month, April-October. Sample them all at Burwood Brewing Company’s new location in the Airport District. Digest with a cold brew, lawn games, and picture-perfect views of the Blues and vibrant green wheat fields.

Mother’s Day – May 13. Give your mom the royal Walla Walla treatment, starting with the Marcus Whitman Hotel’s annual elegant Mother’s Day Brunch. Continue the pampering with Mom’s Mimosas & Macaroons at Browne Family Vineyards, then decorate a cupcake at Frosted – The Cupcake Shop across the street. Walk off those sweets with a stroll through Pioneer Park, or if mom’s a history buff, take her to see a living history performance at Fort Walla Walla Museum in the afternoon.

Return to the River Salmon Festival – May 19. The 10th annual festival, presented by the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, features releasing of chinook salmon, a First Foods and medicinal plants display, tribal dance performance, and more, with food provided by the Wine Country Culinary Institute’s food truck.

Memorial Day Weekend – May 26-28. Enjoy a laid-back Walla Walla weekend before the main season hits. Many wineries host live music, including Northstar Winery and Spring Valley Vineyard. Take the opportunity to explore the Valley in mild temperatures with a downtown shopping stroll, or a walk around Bennington Lake to see what’s in bloom.

Art Happenings:

Live Cinema Series at the Gesa Power House Theatre hosts a variety of live screenings, including the opera “Carmen” on April 11, and The Royal Opera’s current “Macbeth” production on April 25 and May 16. The Royal Ballet celebrates Leonard Bernstein in “Bernstein Centenary” on May 9.

The Foundry Vineyards hosts Yoga in the Gallery each Saturday morning in April. Find your inner peace among the vibrant landscape paintings of James Lavadour (current exhibit runs through April 22).

First Friday Art Tour – May 4. The kickoff of the season’s First Friday Art Tours showcases our many talented local artists in galleries and restaurants throughout the walkable downtown or a quick drive to nearby wineries.

Walla Walla Symphony Series: The Planets, A Cosmic Chorus – May 8. Catch the 2017-2018 season’s grand exit with Gustav Holst's best-known work. Don’t miss the intimate (and free) “Inside the Music” pre-concert talk. The Walla Walla Symphony is the longest continually operating symphony orchestra west of the Mississippi and has been celebrating great music for 101 years.
