Discovering Walla Walla

Snuggled in the heart of the rich Walla Walla Valley in Washington State’s southeast corner, Walla Walla is a down-to-earth city filled with block after block of charming, beautifully restored 19th-century brick buildings. “The town so nice they named it twice,” as the Chamber of Commerce likes to say. Take a stroll and you’ll come across indie bookstores, an art deco gas station–turned–lounge, cafés, wineries, and restaurants. Musicians strum on street corners, and food stands purvey bags of sweet onions—a local favorite for more than a century.

With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the surrounding Walla Walla Valley and the lovely Blue Mountains just to the east are a magnet for outdoor lovers. There’s hiking, rafting, fishing, golf, and biking through magnificent woods and lush vales. In winter Walla Walla is a perfect base for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and more. And with more than 100 wineries dotting the valley, a day of leisurely wine tasting is mandatory.
